Lyrical, Modern & Contemporary


Lyrical is a type of dance that comes from the merging of ballet and jazz dance. It is very expressive and emotional often performed to the lyrics of a ballad style piece of music. Lyrical movements are soft and graceful, but can also be strong and powerful. Dancers are expected to execute ballet and jazz dance techniques, but can also waiver from it to create individual style.

Modern & Contemporary

Modern dance was created as a reaction to ballet. It is a free, expressive style of dance that challenges the dancer to think abstractly. At South South Dance we focus on core modern dance techniques such as Graham, Horton, and Limon. In our modern classes we also teach contemporary dance, which is a style of dance that incorporates modern, ballet, jazz, and other dance styles.
