As a classical dance form, ballet demands grace and precision, using formalized steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement.
Ballet technique and the strength and flexibility that comes with it is helpful to have in many other styles of dance. We recommend it for all dancers!
Jazz is an upbeat and high energy style of dance taught and performed to jazz or popular dance music. Isolations, stylized steps, big jumps and turns are all a part of jazz dance.
Jazz is most commonly seen today through musicals, Broadway shows, performing groups, and school dance teams.
Tap dance is a very musical form of dance in which the dancer taps out rhythms and intricate beats with their feet. Tap dancers are like percussionists with their tap shoes, drumming the floor with combinations of tap steps.
At SSD we teach both Rhythm & Broadway Tap styles, Tap terminology and music basics.
Modern dance was created as a reaction to ballet. It is a free, expressive style of dance that challenges the dancer to think abstractly.
At South South Dance we focus on core modern dance techniques such as Graham, Horton, and Limon. In our modern classes we also teach contemporary dance, which is a style of dance that incorporates modern, ballet, jazz, and other dance styles.
Hip Hop is a popular, high energy style of dance that originates from social and cultural dance forms and was popularized through music videos and film. It focuses on musicality, grooves, sharp movements and is taught and performed to hip hop music and other upbeat tunes.
Acro class at SSD focuses on developing the flexibility and strength to perform acrobatic skills that can be integrated in to other dance choreography.
